The Weathered Isle
The Weathered Isle
You wake up to the sound of waves lapping gently against the rotting timbers of an old dock. You can feel that you are lying on its weathered planks. When you open your eyes, the first thing that you see is a sky full of stars beyond counting. A pair of large moons hangs in the sky, one bone white, and the other rusty red. You blink once, twice, and then rise to look around. There are others here, and some of them appear very strange to your eyes, as if they have tumbled out of another time or some truly exotic place. Indeed, this is certainly not a familiar place, and you find that familiar tools, comforts, and weapons that you are used to carrying may be missing, perhaps mere feet away, perhaps nowhere to be seen. In fact, more than the purely physical seems to be affected. Even memories of before are a bit fuzzy, a bit muted. You have trouble calling them to mind with any consistency or clarity.
An uneasy weight nests itself at the top of your stomach. There are structures nearby, though they look as if they've been abandoned for quite some time. There's no escaping it. Your sense of unreality builds. You start to wonder where you are, how you got here, and how you might escape. Perhaps you take an interest in the others - maybe one of them knows something - and perhaps you don't.
At some point, somebody - maybe even you - notices the glint of something polished under the soft light of the moons. In the middle of the abandoned village, looking like a very recent addition, is a large crimson crystal. Perhaps you touch it. Perhaps somebody else takes the risk. The moment that happens, regardless of language, intelligence, or form of communication, knowledge of your situation floods into your mind, unbidden and unstoppable. You are on an island. It is about 16 kilometers long. There are seven other crystals like this one scattered throughout its forests, fields, mountains, and deserts. There is another group of people in another set of ruins on the other side of the island. Either you or they must gather all of the crystals. The ones who succeed will get to leave this place. The ones who fail... their fate is not elaborated upon.
As people adjust to the startling news, a final unwelcome thought bullies its way into your mind: one of you will receive an ability to track and locate these crystals - a sort of radar, you think, if you're from a place that has such technology. You must decide amongst yourselves who will wield this power. Perhaps you should hurry. The other group may already be searching.

'come and get them' - Leonidas at Thermopylae
Who are you? Leonidas I king of Sparta, son of Anaxandridas II Spartan king, aged ~40. became famous for his sacrifice at Thermopylae as part of the greek rear-guard, allowing the rest of the army to escape .
What are you? Male, Lacedaemonian, King of Sparta
When are you from? 500 B.C.
What were you doing before you woke up here? Training.
How can we expect you to behave? won't run away from a fight (due to the shame it would cause him) although he probably won't engage carelessly. laconic (a type of humour the spartans were famed for) seems a bit arragont.
What are you carrying? Armour, helmet and red cloak. presumabaly he would have a sheath with his xiphos (a short sword) in (although probably drawn). given the scenario he arrived in (in the middle of training) he was probably holding his 'apsis' as well in his hand
What else do you own? Large spartan shield an 'apsis, a large, hefty spear (that a spartan could use one handed with his spear) called a 'dory'.
What appears in your nightmares? The wrath of the gods, being outcast from his people, dying in some method other than combat.
What's your lucky number? 1
'Read Euler, Read Euler. He is master of us all' - Pierre-Simon Laplace
Who are you? Leonhard Euler, 40, published 856 books and papers, the most of all mathematicians. he is estimated to have written a quater of all mathematical and scientific literature in the 18th century most famous for Eulers number and Eulers Identity. unfortunately, the book of his that was most widely red was "letters of Euler on different Subjects in Natural Philosophy Addressed to a German Princess"
What are you? Male, swiss, proffessor of mathematics at Berlin academy
What were you doing before you woke up here? trying to prove something or other, probably
When are you from? 1747
How can we expect you to behave? a religious, simple man, who likes to get into arguments about things he doesn't understand. not very good at practical stuff. will die quickly.
What are you carrying? probably his clothes, maybe at most something to write with.
What else do you own? probably a mechanical adding device, a mechanical multiplication device (both of which existed.) probably a notebook and writing tools.
What appears in your nightmares? going to hell, Spiders, infidels (i.e. non christians)
What's your lucky number? 2

Hey all, giving you a heads' up that signups for this RPG are closing probably this weekend. Try to have at least one character finished by then. The RPG should start mid-week. Open character slots (if there are any) will be filled by us talking on the discord and throwing in some others who we think will be interesting. Late joiners can 'adopt' one of those characters.
Oh ya, I added one more bit of character info for you guys to fill in, on Marti's recomendation: When are you from?

Who are you? Theodora, 29, Empress of the Byzantine Empire who rose from very humble origins.
What are you? Female, Caucasian Cypriot, Newly-crowned Empress (formerly an wool-spinner, actress, and maybe a prostitute)
When are you from? 529 AD (lived 500-548 AD)
What were you doing before you woke up here? Lying in bed after having passionate sex with her husband, the Emperor Justinian.
How can we expect you to behave? Ruthless, scheming, imperious, thorough, and unflinchingly brave, she often has a temper and does not take kindly to those who show entitlement. Beyond these typically ruleresque characteristics, she has another side as well. Theodora is deeply devoted to her early form of Christianity, cares deeply about the downtrodden and commonfolk and, when matters get particularly serious, can generally be counted on to behave honourably.
What are you carrying? Fine clothing, a great deal of jewellery, and a hidden dagger.
What else do you own? half of an empire, material wealth beyond your wildest dreams, a fine team of horses and a chariot

Alonso de Contreras
Who are you? Alonso de Contreras, 31, renowned corsair, captain, soldier, and general scoundrel
What are you? Male, Caucasian Castillian, Captain in the Order of St. John
When are you from? 1613 (lived 1582-1641)
What were you doing before you woke up here? hiding from the authorities after a duel gone wrong.
How can we expect you to behave? Alonso is pragmatic. He is fiercely proud, but will shamelessly flatter if it gets him what he wants. He is passionate, materialistic, opportunistic, and enigmatic, his motivations known only to him. He cares very deeply about very few people, and is quick to sever ties when they're no longer advantageous. He is bold to a fault, temperamental, and amazingly good at justifying his less-savoury actions. He is consistently able to thoroughly convince himself of his own righteousness.
What are you carrying? His clothes, a commission from the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John, a dagger, a small flask, a rather significant pouch of gold coins, a wheellock pistol, and a curved shortsword.
What else do you own? A small caravel mounting 8 cannon, a stash of hidden artillery and munitions in the town of Hornachos, a set of playing cards, a pair of dice, an empty chest.

Princess Changping
Who are you? Zhu Meichuo, 17, last princess of the Ming dynasty and tragically romantic figure
What are you? Female, Chinese, Princess
When are you from? 1646 (lived 1629-1646)
What were you doing before you woke up here? walking in the garden with her husband as he talked about a recent battle. Dreaming of what it might be like to be a warrior and master of her own destiny.
How can we expect you to behave? In some ways, Meichuo behaves as you'd expect a young woman of royal birth to behave: from her etiquette and sense of duty, to her singing voice and calligraphy. She loves her new husband, Zhou Xian, deeply, and takes an interest in his hobbies and pursuits. However, her father's final, desperate insanity and suicide has left her deeply scarred and traumatized, but oddly apathetic towards death and danger. It has come for her once and she has escaped it. If it comes again she will be prepared to face it, whatever the result. Beyond the legends, there's another side to her character. She's a teenaged girl. She strives to adapt and improve herself, but this mostly devolves into fangirling over famous heroes and historical figures and trying to emulate their steely determination and self-reliance.
What are you carrying? Her fine silk robes, a fan, a comb, and a single lily that her husband picked for her.
What else do you own? A calligraphy set, a lot of clothes and shoes, a small collection of pretty stones and minor antiques including into an old staff from a Buddhist monk, a cosmetic prosthetic arm that she never uses.
What appears in your nightmares? her father during his murderous rampage, cannon bombardment, the feeling of being slashed with a sword.

Catherine I of Russia
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_I_of_Russia

Characters
Theodora
What appears in your nightmares? Rogue Bears, Riots, being powerless.
What's your lucky number? 5
