This is mostly just here because it looks goddamned gorgeous: like a deadly hoverboard. That's right, I like my hoverboards deadly. I laugh in the face of danger, or something. Anyways, speaking of danger, journey into the depths with...

ABYSS

Abyss by Floating Castle Robotics on Sketchfab

It's a Black Dog-style drum spinner with removable wheelguards and front wedgelets. In fights where undercutters are an isssue, the light blue tips can come off, revealing much-shortened, rounded-off black nubs beneath. It has 2WD skids for some wedging action, and is designed to be impossible to high-center. Stats and weight class TBD.

I Only Dance Crabcore, Motherfucker!

Post by The Monsterworks » Sun Jan 27, 2019 11:10 am

Tell me, friend: do you like bad music? Are you a crustacean enthusiast? Do you, perchance, enjoy dancing? Have you ever watched this video before?

You may believe that this qualifies you as 'crabcore'. If you do, I'd like to take a moment to put the brakes on that. There is one more qualification that is a must: you need to have an appreciation for an obscure, objectively shitty pseudo-subgenre of heavy metal. Pass that doozy of a hurdle, and I officially anoint you worthy to live the crabcore life. Speaking for myself, I know that...

I Dance Crabcore, Motherfucker!

I Dance Crabcore, Motherf*cker! (claws closed) by Floating Castle Robotics on Sketchfab

Yes, this is a bot: one where Industrial Dieselpunk meets Mad Max, meets a fleeting heavy metal trend. And yes, it hugs you and then slices you up into teeeeeeny little pieces. Above, is a view with the claws closed and the saw at its furthest downward extension. Below, the claws are open and the saw is 'up' in its resting position.

I Dance Crabcore, Motherf*cker! (claws open) by Floating Castle Robotics on Sketchfab

So basically, it's a clamp and saw kinda deal. I wanted to do a horizontal clamp because they aren't done as much and also just to be in keeping with the theme. With the placement of its wheels, it functions as a 2WD wedge. The Omniwheel H-drive allows it to circle strafe or, if it also turns in the direction that it's strafing, to legitimately side/diagonal strafe. Unlike mecanum drive, omniwheels in an H setup don't require any special inputs or algorithms, just a second channel for the one wheel perpendicular to the others. Basically, it can drive normally on normal wheels. For fights where more knockback resistance is needed, I can swap out the omnis as the two main drive wheels for a pair of regular ones with rubber tires and just not throttle the remaining omni in the middle.

The various teeth, bars, and spikes (including those on the wedge) can obviously be removed if needed. The 'rivets' are purely ornamental - nobody rivets a battlebot - as are the support bars/tubes coming up from the base of the claws. Those 'pods' are actually solidly attached to the chassis and are part of it. Obviously, I Dance Crabcore, Motherfucker! can self-right using its saw arm and it's designed to be basically impossible to high-center. That's about all. Stay crab, my friends.

Oh yeah, here's the bot that came out of the second half-hour challenge:

Black Diamond

After cleaning it up, I decided to make it a HW and chuck it in CBC3 with a statline of 8/6/2/5/9. Currently undefeated. Fingers crossed!

Hallo, friends! Here is death turtle!

Carbonemys II

Carbonemys II by Floating Castle Robotics on Sketchfab

Carbonemys was part of my original team from way back in the day, but it never saw combat, which was probably a good thing, since it was terribly designed and never would've worked. I've ditched the clutch-transfer mechanism in favour of a hammer since I wanted to make a legitimate death-hammer ever since Mastodon was last seen.

Slow, lumbering, stout, and surprisingly squirmy, the turtle was put into CBC3 with a statline of 4/1+1/1/15+1/9 (+1 plow), where it's there to flatten bots in one shot or lose a lopsided decision trying!

I wanted to have my own Hellhound, since it's an archetype I haven't done often before. I just wanted one that looks cool because I am an objectively better renderer than my brother, when he can be coaxed to render. Anyways, inspiration was wanting to make an American muscle-themed bot but then flipping through channels and seeing Ghost Rider, that terrible Nicholas Cage movie from like 15 years ago, on the TV last weekend. I knew what had to be done. A synthesis was created. A monster was born. I have regrets. The name comes from a Children of Bodom song.

A simple vertical spinner from the March 26 half-hour render challenge. I called it Blue Malice because I couldn't think of a better name.

Early Fall Update: Glacier III and MADSCIENCE

Post by The Monsterworks » Tue Dec 17, 2019 7:27 pm

I wanted to do a melty-brain deathspinner, but I couldn't just make a normal one, so I turned to...

MADSCIENCE

This absolutely zany contraption was designed with a central piston to allow it to escape wedges, pins, and being stacked on its side - things that are the bane of any melty's existence. It seemed to have worked pretty well. This bot walked away with the ROBOTS3 Lightweight title!

Something something grim and frostbitten, intimidating, majestically menacing and forbidding. You get the idea! It's...

Glacier III

The ultimate Monsterworks stupidass 17+ power murderspinner is back for its third and most ridiculous iteration! Cower in fear, mortals, or something resembling that. Definitely has a shot at winning REDDIT 2 if it ever finishes fucking DESTROYING HELLHOUND TO PIECES!!!!!1!!11!1!!!!1one!1!!!!!11!!!1!

ARC Rumble Update: r/NotTheOnion

Post by The Monsterworks » Tue Dec 17, 2019 7:28 pm

A quick entry whipped up for the ARC Rumble a few months ago, mostly just to have some fun and game the hinged wedges being equal to 2WD rule change. I think it tied for the win or came second. :P

r/NotTheOnion

Lo and behold, in true Monsterworks fashion, I've now gone and made those the official CBC4 rules and banned any gaming of them. Ain't I a hypocrite? Ain't I a stinker?

Late Fall Update: RipTide re-render and Blood Diamond

Post by The Monsterworks » Tue Dec 17, 2019 7:29 pm

Stoked to hang ten and carve some epic waves while shouting "Cowabunga!" it's...

RipTide

This totally rad drum spinner leaves nothing but wipeouts and noodled opponents in its wake, courtesy of its speed, hella gnar wedges, and giant, hollow weapon. The tips of the skids are removable if they need to be, so RipTide won't eat it if any kooks try some shit.

Because Black Diamond making an undefeated title run wasn't enough, my greedy ass had to have a second go at the design for Thunder Underground. Presenting...

Blood Diamond

While not technically the same bot as its larger sibling (you'll notice a couple of minor differences), this is Last Rites, Mortician, or Suitcase Nuke to Tombstone.

Pre-Christmas Update: Brimstone II

Post by The Monsterworks » Tue Dec 17, 2019 7:30 pm

Risen from the depths of hell (in 40s/50s dieselpunk splendour and bathed in chrome) is 2016's metabreaking terror:

Brimstone

The original Monsterworks FBS is back and no, it's no longer a melty-FBS. That was gamebreaking. Sorrynotsorry. Stats and other details to come if I ever decide that this is more than an artbot because lolFBS in the current meta.

And now for a design that's been in incubation in some form or another for over a year, prepare to test your might against this Whiplash-style vertical spinner. It's...

Finishing Move

Taking the idea of a 'control spinner' to an entirely different level, this is a spinner designed to keep up with the bricks, control the match and deal a bit of damage, and to dodge around lumbering spinners. It's pretty much the antithesis of my usual high armour / high weapon / low drivetrain approach. Sometimes you've got to shake things up a bit.

Finishing Move by Floating Castle Robotics on Sketchfab

After twice falling a bit short of a championship, I decided it was time that Magnolia Grande finally received a redesign. While it remains an ICE-powered undercutting terror, virtually everything else has changed. Gone are the wasteful dual blades, the tank treads, and the fanciful radial engine. What's left is a lean, mean, dieselpunk monster:

Magnolia Grande II

Themed after an early WWII era bomber, the new Grande sports a two stroke ICE with the fuel pump, dry sump, etc. setup required to run inverted if necessary. Its exhaust pipes are fully functional, howl like a demonic legion under full throttle, and will occasionally spit flames when accelerating to especially high revs. This iteration of Magnolia Grande is also more properly invertible than the last, with its dual-pronged 'figurehead' adjustable in height (and removable) and larger and smaller tires available to allow its mighty weapon the option of sneaking over low-slung plows while in overcutter mode or still being able to hit low-profile opponents if flipped. Further complicating matters for the other guys are the (again, removable) upward-facing teeth on its blade (yes, they clear its bodywork with room to spare), which allow it a superior grip on their clamps, overhead weapons, and the edges of their plows.
