Middleweight: Brimstone
(Theme Music)

Image

So, what, precisely, is this infernal contraption? It's my new middleweight: Brimstone. It's an industrial steampunk-themed melty-brain and single-toothed horizontal spinner combo ironically powered by a lightweight axial diesel engine and armed with an optional flamethrower mounted in the weapon head. The engine has an excellent power-to-weight ratio and can run on a variety of different fuels. Fittingly, Brimstone belches black smoke, is louder than a demonic army on the march, and surrounds itself with a whirling ring of fire. The combination of the smokestack, the high torque of the diesel engine, and the single-toothed design allow it to self-right with ease.

The copper-coloured pipes that adorn its sides are purely ornamental, extremely light, and can be removed for matches. The vents on the sides actually let out excess heat and tire smoke. When spinning up, Brimstone becomes a whirling dervish of white smoke and fire. However, the spectacle does not last long. Its melty-brain system is geared primarily for translational movement, and so only reaches a factor of five rotational speed. Combined with the three point melty-brain spin-up bonus, it enjoys a traction ratio of 5:4. This means that it reaches its peak rotational velocity almost instantaneously, and once spun up, moves with incredible speed. Once this optimal state has been achieved, viewers and opponents alike will wonder and cower as the axial diesel engine rumbles to life and gouts of thick black smoke pour from the smokestack, signalling the activation of Brimstone's primary weapon: the single-toothed cogwheel blade. There are two versions of this weapon: the ornamental one pictured above, and a simplified version that includes none of the extra gears and cogs. With eleven weapon armour, both blades are incredibly tough, making their destruction at the hands of other spinners highly unlikely. So, with all of the description out of the way, let's get down to the nitty-gritty: what, exactly, are Brimstone's stats?

Stats

Configuration One: 5 speed | 16 weapon (11/11) | 7 armour (11 weapon armour)| 1 traction (+3 spin-up bonus) | 1 torque
Configuration Two: 5 speed | 15 weapon (10/10) + 1 flamethrower | 7 armour (11 weapon armour) | 1 traction (+3 spin-up bonus) | 1 torque

Hello, all of you irresistible forces in the superheavyweight division! Meet the immovable object. Well, actually it's kind of an irresistable force too...

Deus Ex

Image

Size Matters
As with so many of my machines, your first question might be: "WTF is it?!" Quite simply put, it's the silliest flipper of all time. More properly termed, it's an A.D.D. No that doesn't mean that it had problems paying attention in the early nineties. A.D.D. stands for Arena Denial Device. Deus Ex enters the arena folded up into five sections along the seams which are visible in the linked pictures, with the two on either side at a vertical and held by a latch. When the actuator that controls the bot's ability to push its front plow down is triggered, the latch unlocks, allowing gravity to unfold the entire bot. Then, Deus Ex is 46 glorious feet wide, which is enough to stretch nearly the entire width of either arena, with a bit of wiggle room. Other superheavyweights simply won't be able to get past its flipper and flank it.

The Irresistible Force
So let's talk about the flipper a bit. It might just be the mightiest flipper that robotic combat has ever witnessed, with thirteen base power and a stroke of seventeen feet. Yes, you read that correctly. It can fling opposing bots 24.5 feet through the air. Take solace in the fact that there is a strip of one foot running across the middle of the arena where you are safe from being thrown out of it. However, the flipper's front plow is also incredibly shallow, incredibly long (9.2 feet), and incredibly tough. It consists of a very thin layer of titanium with a fracture toughness of 66! This is lain on top of extremely lightweight aluminum (except for where it's mounted to the chassis bars). The real strength, though, comes from a layer of folded graphene sandwiched between them. Though a bit brittle (hence why it isn't on top), this is the hardest producible material known to humankind, with a tensile strength factorially higher than that of even the strongest steel alloys. It is also among the absolute best at dissipating and distributing incoming energy. Finally, it's not cheap. Yep, this is a bling bot.

The Immovable Object
The flipper is the only part of Deus Ex with any serious armour, so it's extremely long to stymie the attacks of spinners and has a lip that rises abruptly to a near vertical to stop canny opponents from monstertrucking over the top and pesky hammers from getting at the internals. Certain features, such as the chasses' metal lattices, are rendered much larger in the linked album than they would actually appear in real life for the sake of clarity. The lip at the top of the plow rises almost a foot at a 75 degree angle, all but guaranteeing that any bot attempting to climb it will simply end up flipping itself. Adding to the fearsomeness of this weapon is its broadness, flatness, and sheer mass. It is the shallowest angled flipper in ARC, and it rests against the ground with a weight greater than that of a normal Superheavyweight (yes, this is a walker because that was the only way to make it viable due to the weight bonus. Sorry). Just to be certain, however, there it a second mechanism that can push the backs of the rams up, pushing the plow into the ground and ensuring that it gets beneath opponents. Yup. It presses, and the walking pods are on pivots, so that it doesn't high end itself.

The Diet from Hell
So, how did I make something so large viable? The entire frame of Deus Ex, with the exception of portions directly related to the weapon, is constructed of lightweight tubular aluminum in a rigid, well-braced steel lattice. There is no chassis armour, merely sheets of kevlar covering most gaps (You can take the armour rating to be a reflection of the durability of things like the rams, tanks, and frame). The drive train is very minimal, since this is less of a battlebot and more of an Arena Denial Device (ADD). It only needs to creep forward in a straight line, and potentially backward, so it does not require a great deal of battery power. The dual chasses also don't have any baseplates, merely a raised and reinforced lattice to keep internal components safe from hazards (they can't hurt what they can't reach). In fact, the majority of the 'inside' of this machine is just empty space, designed to provide a buffer layer between opposing machines' weapons and the internals, should the unthinkable happen. For the sake of realism, the tanks for the rams contain only enough gas for a handful of mighty flips. However, between the prospect of an OOTA and catastrophic falling/ceiling damage taken by opposing machines, fights should not last long. If Deus Ex somehow runs out of gas and fails to KO its opponent, it is still an effective wedge, has 10.5 feet of knockback mitigation, and is almost impossible to damage.

Stats
So, how do you stat a flipper designed purely to be a fight-ending weapon? To be honest, I really struggled with that, so these stats are pretty tentative:

Speed: 4 | Weapon: 14 (+1 upward ram) | Armour: 12 (+3 front wedge) | Traction: 3 | Torque: 1

Why is it that all of a sudden, I could suddenly imagine Kody turning up with the giant remote-controlled hammer from this Worms 2 cutscene just to beat Deus Ex? :P

i think it's time to impose a size limit in ARC :v:

I also think it's kind of unrealistic that your super light chassis still has 9 body armor which is fairly heavy

If you read the description, you'll see that I've kind of conceded that and specified that the chassis armour rating really only applies to to the support frames and the durability of the internal components (and their mountings). I'd also like it to be a reflection of the amount of buffer space in between. I'll edit that in later.

The Monsterworks: New Monsters

Introducing a new thematic pair built exclusively for use in the upcoming NARCO tournament:

Venom & Antivenom

Image

Venom

This one's a crusher, which is sure to draw some measure or derision. Crushers suck. Don't they? That's why it's a walking crusher. Still think it's borderline? Well, you'd be right. That's why the weapon is mounted on a 5 power turret. When the jaws open, the lower jaw presses, to boot. Basically, I feel as if that's the only way to make an actual good crusher. In return, I've had to sacrifice any sort of drive train, but it is what it is. With such a fast turret, investing too much in the drive train would be a waste anyways. The long and short of it is that the stats look like this:

Venom: 2 speed, 1 traction, 1 torque, 19 weapon (14/5),11 armour (+2 plow)

Image

Antivenom

Just as Venom was designed to have some serious sting, Antivenom is designed to take the sting out of powerful weapons. Extremely low and well armoured, with a solid drive train, a fast turret, and a decent flipper for match control, the armour bonus, self-righting, and even OOTA potential, this is a dedicated spinner killer. If launched upward or wedged, it has floating wheels that should maintain contact with the ground. If outmaneuvered, those same wheels are also omniwheels, allowing it to strafe to the side. Finally, since both the flipper (which is part of the turret assembly) and the turret have five weapon points and their own weapon armour bonuses, along with a +1 dedicated to the flipper, Antivenom's flipper has a grant total of fourteen armour. That should be enough to tank just about any deathspinner that tries to make a meal of it. Anyway, here are the stats:

Antivenom: 7 speed, 5 traction, 2 torque, 7 weapon (5/5), 9 armour (+1 flipper)

Prepare for a dose of...

JUSTICE

Image

It's a pneumatic puncher in the mold of something like Smilodon. However, it uses a wine bottle opener-style linkage to power a trio of hammers directly off of the ram. Whenever it fires backwards, the hammers fire forwards, and vice versa. In effect, it's a 360 degree hammer bot that's capable of hitting opposing machines that end up in either of its killzones with a cumulative weapon power of 36 and striking with rapid-fire precision. While none of these individual blows have more than 12 power, with three hammers and a ram whaling away, the damage should add up quite quickly and be damned near impossible to avoid. What's more, the hammers lock in place until the bar is fired again, allowing them to be used as clamps for match control purposes.

In terms of its damage mitigation abilities, Justice relies primarily on the fact that it is almost impossible to approach without getting hit, and any blows that it lands will either sweep opposing machines in towards its frontal and rear killzones or will pivot Justice itself around. For good measure, it has an outer layer of sacrificial armour that is mounted to the chassis via rubber shock mounts that are designed to pull the outer shell inwards, effectively pressing it against the ground with a force that falls halfway between that of hinged skirts and a 2WD wedge.

Stats

5 speed | 4 traction | 2 torque | 12 weapon | 7 armour (+2 weapon assembly)

Alternatively, I can stat Justice so that no bot will be able to escape the long arm of the law:

3 speed | 2 traction | 1 torque | 15 weapon | 9 armour (+2 weapon assembly)
