ROBOCON: Ritual vs Eye of Newt

Post by Venice Queen » Mon Apr 09, 2018 5:25 pm

Ritual: Speed: 6 / Traction: 5 / Torque: 2 / Weapon (lifter): 5 / Armor: 11
EoN: Speed: 3 // Traction: 2 // Torque: 1 // Weapon: 16 // Armour: 8

16 armor to my 13 puts me in pretty good shape, especially since he has no wedges to speak of, and no way to get around me (there's no way he's climbing my wedge). He won't even be able to really kick me back much since his teeth are more for grinding, so I can just kinda feed him to the flipper hazard things all match for my own amusement.

ROBOCON: Ritual vs Eye of Newt

Stats

Eye of Newt - 3 speed / 2 traction / 1 torque / 16 weapon / 8 armour
vs.
Ritual - 6 speed / 5 traction / 2 torque / 5 weapon / 11 armour

Analysis

1) He has a 13 armour lifter. I'm sure that he's all proud of himself. I'm sure he thinks I'm fucked. He's overconfident. Good. That's just how I like 'em. I'm +5 on his body.

2) Despite the fact that Ritual's the 'brick' in this match, it's not really a brick. It's a Swiss-army bot with a decent but not great drivetrain. We're even in control and its 8-5 speed advantage isn't enough for Gabe to just disregard my drivetrain.

3) This arena is perfect for ambushes. When you start and approach the other bot, you need to pick a side of the central speedbump. Unless you're literally hugging that speedbump like your teddy, there's gonna be a moment when you're rounding it where your flank is exposed.

Strategy

a. Start sideways and spin up. Watch which side he charges me from and back just a tiny bit towards the other side like Imma go around it. Drive a bit slowly to give him a false read on my drivetrain. Once he's made his decision, move to position myself barely past the tip of the speedbump. When he pokes his front past it, charge him, accounting for the time it'll take for me to reach him and him to react. Hopefully I can score a hit past his plow.

b. If his drivetrain is damaged and I have a chance to get around him, just go for it. If it works but he's still mobile, keep ambushing him from one side or the other until it stops working. If it fails, try it again anyways to seem predictable, like a typical deathspinner. Then try something... different.

c. After hits, flee to spin up, using the speedbump to give myself time. Pretend I'm doing that again, and when he's on the other side of it and heading towards one of the ends to round it and inevitably catch me, face the speedbump head on and drive right over it, timing things so that I'll cover the couple of yards just as he's passing. Go right into his side.

d. Am I under any illusion that this is easy to pull off? Nah, but it's possible because reaction time exists, and especially if my opponent is treating this like a typical brick-spinner match and not taking the arena's features into account. Even one hit wins me damage and maybe strategy.
